Today, I have the utmost pleasure to feature a talented friend, who’s truly an inspiration. She works a full-time job, runs a household and a thriving business baking amazing cakes and treats!
Maykala Das, the creative hand behind CakesbyMayk, has been successfully running her business with much passion in Edmonton, Alberta; however, her story goes further back. Read on to know more about this talented and passionate baker!
When did you discover your passion for baking?
“I discovered my passion for baking when I lived in Ndola, Zambia in Africa. We had an amazing Sri Lankan friend who baked the birthday cakes for all the kids in our friends circle. That was my first encounter with butter cream icing and I fell in love with the art of decorating cakes and hence started baking too.”
How did you begin your career in this field? “When I first began baking, it was just for my kids and my friends’ kids. My first formal education was at the BBC Library in Ndola, where I was able to read a lot about cakes, different types of icing to cover the cakes, or fill them. For the next 10 years or so, I only baked and decorated cakes for my friends and family. There came a time when I had too much cake at home with way too many ideas and desires to venture out. I started reading more about cakes and took online classes to polish my skills. After much support, encouragement, and convincing from family and friends, I created my Facebook page CakesbyMayk and began putting the word out.”
What are some challenges you face working with customers?
“Time is the challenge as most customers call for a cake only a day or two before the event. I do all my baking from scratch and I don’t freeze my cakes…which becomes very challenging when I have to meet tight deadlines. “
Share one of your favourite works and explain why it’s your favourite.
“Every cake is dear to me because I do bake them all with passion and love. I have a few favourites, only because I stretched myself into unknown territories and experimented. For example, the peacock cake I made for a friend’s wedding reception was hard labour as I made hundreds of peacock feathers in fondant to cover the cake. I made the body with rice Krispy squares and the result was simple, yet elegant with mesmerizing, vibrant colours and textures.”
Maykala Das also made my wedding cake! I have never seen anything that has truly captured my spirit, and if a close friend were to see the cake, they’d know that it was meant for me! Read below as she describes the creative process of designing our wedding cake.
“I took a picture of Shivangi’s lehanga and wanted to match it with the color of the cake. Inspired by the embroidery, lace, and beads on the lehenga, I added small details to the cake to reflect the same. I wanted it to be rich, adorned with gold, to represent the vibrant South Indian wedding. To top it all, I wanted the cake topper to be a miniature cartoon version of Shivangi and Naren. The little details of Naren’s spiked hair and Shivangi’s earrings, long, braided hair with kunjalam, the madisar, thali, etc truly made the cake! I thoroughly enjoyed making it. It gives me immense pleasure to create things like this.”
What is your signature style? Are your cakes customizable? What truly defines “CakesByMayk”?
“My style is to bring out your dream in cakes. All my cakes are custom made. Any idea can be made into a cake; the sky is the limit! CakesbyMayk means fresh, from scratch, unique, and delightfully mouthwatering.”
What are some tips and tricks you implement while creating cakes for your clients?
“First is to give ample time for your creativity to come out as a cake. Encourage the clients to share all that they have in their mind, their expectations, and what kind of taste they are going for. That should help you come up with a cohesive idea using the client’s wants and needs as your inspiration.”
What advice would you give to someone who’s looking at pursuing something similar to your own business?
“Be passionate about your work; be sincere and work hard. Most of all, take one day at a time.”
There you are, ladies and gentlemen! Didn’t I say she’s talented? I can definitely attest to her statements above and confirm that her cakes are beyond delicious and jaw-dropping to look at. I’m so thankful for a friend like her, because she painstakingly designed and delivered my wedding cake, which was utter perfection in my eyes.
